1-Day Writing Retreat
Read on the web.
Hi Reader,
⠀
Sometimes your creativity needs more than the odd spare hour.
It needs a little space.
Recently, a friend and I decided to create our own one-day writing retreat.
We couldn't make our planned summer writing retreat in Whistler, so instead we chose three Sundays over the summer and set them aside for writing.
No expensive accommodation.
No travelling far from home.
Just a date in the diary, a library full of quiet corners and six hours dedicated to our creative work.
And it worked.
⠀
Daily Life
When everyday life is full of laundry, errands, emails and all the other little things that need doing, creative projects can easily get pushed to the bottom of the list.
You may have a novel you've started, a pile of journal pages waiting to be explored, a blog you've been meaning to write or simply a creative idea that keeps nudging you.
How often do you tell yourself you'll get to it when you have more time?
⠀
⠀
Guard Your Time
The wonderful thing about a one-day retreat is that you don't need more time.
You simply need to protect some of the time you already have.
For our retreat, we each arrived with a list of projects we wanted to move forward.
Having a clear plan meant we could settle in and start working rather than spending half the day deciding what to do.
There was also something lovely about doing it alongside another creative person.
We worked independently, but had that quiet sense of companionship and accountability that comes from knowing someone else is showing up for their creative work too.
⠀
Dinner
And at the end of the day, we celebrated with dinner.
I've written about our little experiment and why I think a one-day writing retreat could be something worth trying, even if you're not a writer.
You could use the same idea for painting, journaling, photography, planning, crafting or any creative project that has been waiting patiently for your attention.
⠀
⠀
Perhaps you could choose a date, find somewhere inspiring and give yourself one day to focus on something that matters to you.
You don't have to wait for the perfect opportunity.
You can begin with the time you have.

P.S.
Your retreat doesn't have to be anywhere fancy. A library, café, community space or even a quiet corner of your own home could become your temporary creative studio. The important part is deciding that your creativity deserves the space.
