How to Plan a Writing Retreat

Read on the web.

Hi Reader,

Have you ever dreamed about disappearing for a few days just to focus on your creativity?

Sounds good, doesn't it?

Quiet Time

Lately, I have been craving quiet time away from the noise of daily life.

Not forever, just long enough to think clearly, write slowly and reconnect with my creative work.

As bloggers, artists and makers, it can sometimes feel as though our attention is constantly being pulled in a hundred different directions.

Life Gets in the Way

The strange thing is that even when we deeply love our creative practice, it can still be difficult to make some time in our day for it.

There are errands, emails, laundry, meals and all the tiny interruptions that constantly chip away at the desired focused creative time.

I find that before long, another week passes and the writing or art project I cared about has barely moved forward.

Writing Retreat

So, this year I planned a solo writing retreat for myself in Whistler, British Columbia.

I chose a simple hotel within a couple of hours from home, packed my laptops and sketchbook and created a gentle timetable for my days away.

My goal was not perfection or productivity at all costs.

I simply wanted dedicated time to write, reflect, journal and breathe.

Writing Schedule

In this article I share exactly how I planned the retreat, including the budget, travel details, daily writing schedule and why I intentionally included walks, rest and coffee shop pauses throughout the day.

I also talk about the importance of flexible structure and how having even a loosey goosey plan can help support your creativity.
